When baseball first started, players whittled their own bats. This meant that they were of all sorts of shapes, sizes and weights. The rules, once they were codified, state: “The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2.61 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood.”
The most famous bat in baseball is the one formerly owned by George Brett. During a game, the manager of the opposing team felt that Brett had been using too much pine tar (used to help the batter grip), and the ref agreed. The decision was overturned on appeal, but almost a month passed before the game could be properly finished. Sadly, there have been several other times other than ‘The Pine-Tar Incident’ where unscrupulous players have tried to give themselves an edge over the baseball odds.
