The UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious club competition in European football and, indeed, the world. Each year, the best club teams battle for the trophy, and due to the quality of players on show, the tournament often produces classic matches.
The Champions League was founded in 1955, although it was known as the European Cup until it was rebranded in 1992. With the top athletes and the biggest football teams in the world on show, the Champions League has a worldwide following and is broadcast in hundreds of different countries.
And such immense popularity goes hand in hand with online betting. Here at Betsson, we have so many different markets - pre-match, live and outright - for Champions League betting, all with great odds. But before you use our sportsbook to make some brilliant bets, check out this UEFA Champions League guide.
What is the Current Champions League Format?
The Champions League format changed from the start of the 2024-25 season, with 36 participants rather than the previous 32. Under the new format, each team plays eight matches in a league phase, replacing the more traditional group stage.
Teams do not play sides home and away either. Instead, they play fixtures against eight different teams. These matches are decided using an automated draw system, with the 36 teams split into four seeding pots.
The top eight sides in the league phase automatically qualify for the Round of 16, while the teams in 9th to 24th compete in two-legged play-off ties to decide the other eight qualifiers. After the league phase and play-offs, the knockout stage of the competition follows the previous path with the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and then the final.
