Like football, netball, rugby, or any team sport, the aim is to score as many goals as possible while defending your own. Whoever has the most goals at the end of two 30-minute halves is the winner. Before a game, 6 players and a goalkeeper on each side will take position before the throw-off. The thrower must be in contact with the middle line with their foot and all defending players must be at least three metres away. The throw-off will also commence like this after a goal has been scored.
Then play can start with players possessing, dribbling, or shooting the ball with heir hands and the opposing players trying to intercept. When an attacking player has an opportunity to score a goal, they must not cross into the goalkeepers area before making their throw. What is allowed, however, is starting a jump from outside the crease that propels the player into the zone from the air. As long as they have released the ball before they land, they are within handball rules and have a better shot at the goal.
Officially, handball’s beginning was when the first written set of rules were published in 1906 in Denmark, but there is evidence of versions of the game being played as far back as Ancient Roman times. Knowing the Romans’ penchant for gambling, it could be safely assumed that handball betting happened over 2,000 years ago.
Eleven years after the first set of rules were published, three German sportsmen published the rules that we see in the modern game today and by the 1920s the first international games were being played. In the early days of the modern sport, countries from continental Europe took up handball, which proved to be the most popular in Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
The first time handball was seen on the Olympic stage was for the 1936 Summer Games held in Nazi Germany. Any handball fans who were hoping that the fledgling sport would benefit from an international boost from the first ever televised Olympics must have been dismayed that is had to take place amid such controversy. That year Germany beat Austria to the gold amid what must have been the tensest Olympics in history.
Handball wasn’t played again at the Olympics until 1972, which were held again in Germany with Yugoslavia bringing home the gold. That signalled the beginning of a much more established international presence for handball with it being represented in every Olympics since. At the London 2012 Olympics, handball featured on the commemorative coins that year despite not being a popular sport in the UK. The 50p piece carried a design of a player about to take a jumping shot over the top of a diagram of the handball court.
To this day, handball is a permanent fixture in international competitions for both men and women. In addition to an Olympic presence, there are world championships every two years. The games has found popularity in Far East Asia, North Africa, and some parts of South America, but international titles are dominated by European winners.
Beach handball is an upcoming footnote in handball’s history, with championships being held since the year 2000. The rules are virtually the same as regular handball except that there’s an extra point awarded for impressive goals, typically 360-degree jumps or alley-oops. Players well known for these shots add an extra layer of excitement when bookies have to calculate handball odds. Because sand gives a very different surface to play on, players often wear swimwear and go barefoot. There is also almost no dribbling done in beach handball as the ball loses its bounce. Unlike regular handball, beach handball is where teams from South America shine, with Brazil as the reigning world champions.
Torball is a game very like handball which was developed in the 1970s for blind and partially sighted people. The ball has bells inside, so it can be heard across the court and the players usually keep close to the ground when playing. Scoring happens when the attacking team successfully get the ball under three cords tightened at around knee-height and over the goal line. Torball is gaining a lot of popularity because it allows for very quick and reactive gameplay, even when taking into account the player’s disabilities. If only there were handball odds on it becoming a Paralympic sport. It would be a dead cert.
