Rugby union is popular all over the world. Like any popular sport, it has a strong following of betting fans who regularly back their favourite team to win. Rugby union is played between two teams of 15 players. During the game, each team is allowed seven substitutions. Unlike rugby league, there is no maximum number of tackles in rugby union. Players score five points for a try, three for a penalty kick and two for a conversion kick.
From the Challenger Cup and the Six Nations to the Lions Tour and the France Top 14, there are various leagues to wager on with Betsson. Not only do we offer attractive rugby union odds, but we also facilitate mobile betting from the comfort of your sofa. New to rugby union bets? Don't worry, we'll explain everything here in this guide. Below, we explore the sport in more detail and discuss the different rugby union bets and rugby union odds available at Betsson.
History of Rugby Union
Rugby union was first played in England during the 19th century. In its simplest form, the sport is played between two teams on a pitch with H-shaped goalposts at both ends. The first rugby rules were written in 1845 by Rugby School pupils. Since 1886, the sport has been governed by World Rugby, previously known as the International Rugby Federation. The governing body now has 120 countries as members.
Prior to 1895, there was no such thing as rugby union. Instead, the sport was simply known as rugby. It was later split into the two disciplines: rugby league and rugby union. Rugby remained an amateur sport until 1995 when professional rugby was legalised and restrictions on payments to players were removed. Over the next few years, rugby spread to the UK and various countries associated with the British Empire. Since then, people all over the world have been placing rugby union bets. The sport is now enjoyed by both male and female athletes across the globe, with an estimated 6 million people playing rugby in the past year.
Markets and Rugby Union Odds
At Betsson, there are various rugby union bets to choose from. You can find different rugby union odds for each one, so weigh up your options before placing any rugby union bets. Some of the top markets include outright betting, double result, first/last goal scorer and winning margins.
If you're new to rugby union bets, outright betting is a great option. When they're available, try scorer bets also offer great value for money. Wingers, Centres and Fullbacks usually score the most, with back-row athletes helping out occasionally.
If you want a wide range of choice, place your rugby union bets during the World Cup. Match bets are popular during this competition, however, bettors also enjoy other markets such as 1X2 Full Time, Highest Half, Handicap Full Time, To Qualify, Double Result, Winning Margin 5 Way, Winning Margin 17 Way, Total Points Odd/Even, Race to 10 Points and First/Last to Score.
When placing rugby union bets, remember the primacy of the international competitions. Most of the top countries have their athletes on central contracts. Because of this, if domestic games are interrupted by the international calendar, many of the best players cannot play. This is especially true during the Six Nations. If one team is affected by international call-ups, consider placing a handicap bet instead. The handicap market evens out the game and can provide more competitive rugby union odds.

The top international rugby competition is the Rugby World Cup, which takes place every four years.
