The Turkish Super Lig was founded in 1959 after a selection of other leagues in Turkey became obsolete.
Fenerbahce were crowned as the first Turkish Super Lig champions and unsurprisingly, they are one of the most successful clubs in the division’s history. They have won the title 19 times and finished as runners-up on 25 occasions, although Fenerbahce are not Turkey’s most successful football club. Current champions and European powerhouse Galatasaray take that crown, having won the Turkish Super Lig a record 24 times.
Besiktas are the third-most successful club with 16 title wins, while Trabzonspor are the only other club to have won the trophy on multiple occasions (seven times).
Istanbul Basaksehir and Bursaspor have each won the Turkish Super Lig once, with both of those triumphs coming since the turn of the millennium. Interestingly, clubs in Turkey are allowed to place a gold star above their crest with every five title wins they achieve, which is why Galatasaray’s badge has four stars above it.
Galatasaray are also the only Turkish club to have enjoyed success in European competition. They won the 2000 UEFA Cup after beating Premier League side Arsenal in the final on penalties following a 0-0 draw.
How many teams are there in the Turkish Super Lig?
The number of teams in the Turkish Super Lig has differed in recent years.
Twenty-one clubs partook in the 2020-21 season after relegation was scrapped due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
This was reduced to 20 in 2021-22 and then to 19 for 2022-23, before going back up to 20 for the 2023-24 season.
And the number of teams has now been reduced back to 19 for the 2024-25 season, although there are still 38 Matchdays as one team will miss out on the action in each of the Matchdays.

What are some of the Turkish Super Lig Records?
Hakan Sukur holds the record for the most goals in Turkish Super Lig history with 249. He is followed by Tanju Colak (240), Hami Mandirali (219) and Metin Otkay (217).
Fenerbahce legend Alex de Souza is the leading foreign scorer in the league’s history. The Brazilian attacking midfielder netted 136 times in 241 matches between 2004 and 2012, a seriously impressive record.
The record for the Turkish Super Lig’s youngest goalscorer is held by Emre Demir. In November 2019, he scored in a match for Kayserispor at the age of 15 years and 298 days.
But the record for the youngest player to make an appearance is even more ridiculous. In 1972, Cetin Oten played in a match for Sekerspor at the age of 14 years and 223 days.
Umut Bulut is the leading appearance maker in the division. Between 1999 and 2021, the former Turkey international played 515 games for a number of different clubs, including Galatasaray.
Legendary coach Fatih Terim is the holder of the record for the most league title wins with eight, four more than any other manager in history. He won the Turkish Super Lig in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2012, 2013, 2018 and, most recently, 2019.
